I ate my first Fredericksburg peach of the season. It was the biggest, juiciest peach I’ve eaten for a long time. Peaches are one of my favorite fruits and if I could afford to, I’d buy a bushel of them. But I’ve got to admit they are pricy, at least for my budget. I like almost any fresh fruit (except papaya).

Tuesday evening

I didn’t sleep well last night and felt pretty groggy most of the day.

We had a finance meeting after work and it went pretty well and didn’t run over-long.

When I got home from work I took a little nap – right through Jeopardy and the news. I hope I can sleep better tonight.

We had chicken, snow peas, and watermelon for supper – a delicious meal and not too heavy.

Johnny's mother looked out the window and noticed him "playing church" with their cat.

He had the cat sitting quietly, and he was preaching to it. She smiled and went about her work. A while later she heard loud meowing and hissing, and ran back to the open window in time to see Johnny baptizing the cat in a tub of water.

She called out, "Johnny, stop that! The cat is afraid of water!"

Johnny looked up at her and said, "He should have thought about that before he joined my church."

I am now a great-aunt again. Jacob James was born at 2:30 MST today. He weighed 6 lbs and 13 oz.

They had expected to have to induce labor today but Amber went in with labor pains at 7:30 this morning and they let it come naturally and Jacob was born at 2:30 this afternoon. I sure wish I could see him. They emailed lots of pictures when their first child, a little girl, was born, so I hope they will do the same thing now. Amber is doing fine too.

There were more people than usual at church this morning. I went early and opened up, turned on the a/c in the sanctuary and parlor and then went down to the fellowship hall and brought in the things I had brought for the potluck dinner. By that time, Sis had arrived and we did what we could – making tea, coffee, etc. Linda had been in yesterday or the day before and decorated the tables. She does a fantastic job, and used a flag theme, of course. The flag cake that Sis and I took was a great success. There were several other cakes too, but a lot of people wanted the flag cake because of the picture on it. It was a yellow cake with a fudge ripple through it and was very good.

It was a lot of fun and we all had a good time. Neither Sis nor I have to work tomorrow, but we don’t have anything special planned – just a day to relax. I think she does plan to go walk with another couple of ladies for a little while in the morning.

I wonder how many fireworks we will hear in the neighborhood tonight. It is illegal to set them off inside the city limits, but a lot of people do it anyway. They can be fined $2000 if caught, but it’s hard to catch them. At least the ground isn’t as dry as it has been some years.

Precious and Calvin don’t seem to notice the noise, but I have had dogs before that were frightened of fireworks – and I imagine it bothers their sensitive ears even more than it does mine.

Alex must be gone by now. We didn't get much effects of it here in San Antonio and people didn't have to evacuate en masse from the coastal areas. That is a blessing for all involved. There is a huge AA convention in town this week that is said to be the biggest convention ever held in this city, so all the hotels and motels were booked up ahead of time. It would have made it very difficult for evacuees to find rooms. San Antonio hosts many conventions year-round, so this one must be really large to be the biggest.

Excerpt from letter sent to epals:


There is light rain this morning, but we are expecting significant amounts of rain and thunderstorms over the next several days. I haven't had the TV on this morning to hear about Hurricane Alex's progress, but if it gets too bad, San Antonio will also be getting lots of people who are evacuating from the coastal area.

Sis got home Monday night from her week's trip to Colorado and she had to drive through rain nearly all the way, a lot of it heavy. But she did have a great time while she was there, attending a family reunion and getting to see some interesting places on side trips, including the Garden of the Gods and a castle. She was able to spend some time with our brother and sister-in-law there and brought back lots of pictures. I've been scanning them for her and hope to put some of them on my blog photo album. It's a time-consuming process with my scanner so I still have a lot of them yet to do. I got sleepy and went to bed before finishing last night.

She brought home some fresh rhubarb and some home-made mincemeat, the old-fashioned kind with meat in it. Those are two of my favorite pie ingredients, so I am looking forward to some tasty desserts.

Update: She made two pies - one of each flavor and they are just as delicious as I expected they would be.

It is really hot and muggy this morning and it's only a little after 8 a.m. I woke up early as I always do, so at 7 a.m. I went grocery shopping, then stopped at McDonald's and brought home an egg, sausage & cheese biscuit and coffee for my breakfast. I don't cook much just for myself. We cook more when Sis is here, but in this hot weather, it's nice to have microwavable meals in the freezer, so I stocked up on them.

Later I will do my weekly laundry and get that out of the way, but mostly I plan to just laze around today and maybe read a book. We have finished the Lilian Jackson Braun "Cat Who" series again and I stopped at the library yesterday and picked up a book by Rita Mae Brown and Sneaky Pie Brown. It sounds kind of good but I'll just have to see when I get started on it. (Note later: I don't like the book at all)

It is so hot in here. I just checked the thermostat and it is 81. I think I'm going to have to set the a/c a little lower.
