No wonder it felt cold when I got up this morning. I just checked the weather on the internet and it is only 28 degrees. I watched the news on TV last night, but I don't remember the weatherman forecasting it to be quite that cold.

I finished knitting a pink baby blanket this afternoon. I didn't make it for any particular baby.

I worked until noon. This afternoon I went to my weekly beauty shop appointment. I won’t go next week, but will go at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 30th.
We finished up some leftovers for dinner. For supper we had mackerel patties, salad, and fried potatoes. Sis had made some cookies today, so we had a couple of them for dessert.
I started knitting a pink baby blanket tonight. I got 15 rows done.
John called tonight and said Edna is in the hospital. It sounds like congestive heart failure. She has been in the hospital for about a week. He gave Phoebe her phone number so she can call her tomorrow.

I got up at 4:00 this morning and after checking my email, I knitted 10 more rows on the baby blanket. Then I made a pot of coffee. Sis got up later with a migraine headache and had to heat a rice bag and put it on her head for awhile.
Later we went out for breakfast. I brought half of mine home for tomorrow. When we left the restaurant we went to Wal-Mart. I wanted to buy a new coffeemaker for the office. I found one there and got it. It is programmable and has a charcoal filter to put in the tank. We have very hard water and the coffeemakers soon get limed up so I am hoping this will help.
We used a coupon later this afternoon to buy two Subway sandwiches for the price of one and Sis made apple dumplings for dessert. I have wanted homemade apple dumplings for awhile. They were delicious.
Sis and I both talked to Edna for awhile on the phone. She is hoping to go home from the hospital soon but so far the doctors don’t think she is ready.
Fred called later and we both talked to him. He had to go to the doctor and get medicine for an infected eye.

Caroling on the River
The weather was perfect for our outing last night.
It started out rather badly. We all met at the church parking lot to take a van ride downtown to the River Walk. Another of our three churches was to provide the van and driver. The man from our church who is coordinating the trips for all three churches checked twice in the last two days with the other church and was assured that the van and driver would meet us at our church between 6:45 and 7:00 p.m.
He didn't show up. So our coordinator went over to the other church and people there were having a meeting and a dinner and no one there seemed to know anything about the deal. They finally got him the key to the van and allowed him to drive it, as he had already taken the precaution of being put on their insurance for the van in case they needed another driver. He brought the van back and we all got down to the River Walk in time for our assigned barge ride. Thirteen of us went in the 15-passenger van and four more of our group met us down there.
Our barge ride left at 8:00 p.m. and the ride lasted for an hour. The lights decorating the route were beautiful and people on the sidewalks along the River Walk and eating at the outdoor restaurant tables there cheered and waved as we passed, singing Christmas carols as we went.
The ride doesn't normally take an hour, but we went slowly and stopped several times to sing at particular spots.
After it was all over and we were headed back to the church in the van, I was very glad that we had an experienced driver driving, as the traffic was worse than I have ever seen it. He has driven tour buses many times and wasn't a bit intimidated by the traffic.
We got home by 9:30 p.m. and I was soon ready for a good night's sleep. I just don't stay up as late as I used to.

It was 42 when I went to church this morning, but warmed up nicely during the day. We didn't have as many people at church today. I counted 43.There were a few visitors, however.

Hanging of the Greens
It was 30 degrees shortly after I got up this morning. Some parts of the city got even colder.
We went to church and helped decorate it for Christmas. Then we went over to Aldersgate UMC where they were also decorating, and they had prepared a lunch of cbili and cornbread for all the volunteers of both churches. It was delicious.
By the time we got finished it had warmed up nicely.
I took a little nap this afternoon, then got up and knitted for awhile. I finished another Christmas tree ornament. I've done three of them. Now I think I will try to finish and stuff some other items that I have knitted and set aside without putting the pieces together.
This evening I cleaned out the refrigerator in the garage and washed all the shelves and drawers.

We had a pretty uneventful day. An amusing thing happened. My cell phone alarm went off at 5:00 a.m. I had never heard that ring tone before and didn’t know what was going on. I opened and shut the phone and guess I automatically triggered the snooze button because five minutes later it did it again. By that time I was awake enough to look at it and see what to push to keep it from happening again every five minutes.
I was thinking about that and remembered that when we went to Branson, Missouri a couple of months ago, I tried to set the alarm on my cell phone one night and must have done something wrong because it didn’t go off the next morning. Now, two months later it decides to go off. I guess I must have set the calendar wrong on it.
I did not do any Black Friday shopping, but after I got done at the beauty shop this afternoon, I stopped at the grocery and picked up two loaves of whole wheat bread.
Sis made a shepherd’s pie for supper with some of the leftover turkey, mashed potatoes, and some vegetables. It was delicious.

Thanksgiving Day 2010
I woke up at 4:00 a.m. so I got up and put the turkey in the oven. I was glad it had the little red pop-up button that pops out when it is done all the way through.
Sis prepared the mashed potatoes, yams with marshmallows melted into them in the oven, cornbread dressing, and green beans. I fixed a green salad, in addition to the cranberry salad that I made last night. Sis had made pumpkin and rhubarb custard pies yesterday.
We used my red glass dishes (they were my mother-in-law’s, and I think they may be Depression glass), and lit red candles when we were ready to eat.
I picked up our friend at 10:00 this morning and we visited as we finished preparing the dinner, then ate dinner at noon. I only ate a little of each thing, but considering how many things there were, I still ended up feeling like I was the stuffed turkey.
Around 1:30, I took our friend home and we all three agreed that the next thing to do was take a nap. An hour’s nap made me feel much better, but not hungry.
We talked to several different friends and family members on the phone today. Since we couldn’t be together for Thanksgiving, that was the next best thing.

It is very windy outside and is predicted to be down to 37 by tomorrow morning and then down to 27 degrees the next night. What a change from the 85 degree temperatures yesterday and 80 today.

Thanksgiving Eve 2010
I went to work this morning as usual, but about 9:30 a.m. the pastor came in and asked me if I had the bulletin for Sunday done. When I told him yes, he said for me to go ahead and take the rest of the day off. I don’t have to go back to work until Monday, so that will be a nice break.
Sis and I went to Wal-Mart and got a few things, then stopped at IHOP and had lunch. They had a delicious potato soup with cheese, and we each had a bowl with a sandwich and coffee.
This afternoon we cleaned house and cooked for tomorrow. Sis made pumpkin and rhubarb pies, and I made cranberry salad. I’ll put the turkey in the oven early tomorrow morning. I like to roast it in a Reynolds oven bag. It turns out so tender and moist. We plan to also have stuffing, mashed potatoes, yams, and lettuce salad.
I’ll drive over and pick up our friend in the morning and take her home later in the afternoon before the cold front gets here.

I just got up a few minutes ago and took my monthly Boniva pill.
Today is food pantry day at church. They gave out 100 turkeys yesterday to people who had registered at the last food pantry. Today will be the normal pantry-type foods, although I think they were able to get more canned vegetables and sweet potatoes this time. The Food Bank has been stressed with the great needs of the current economy and nearly ran out of food. They have been advertising and having food drives to get donations.
Sis isn't working this week so she will be helping at the pantry today. One of the other churches has a weekly quilters group that meets on Tuesday mornings and she went to that last Tuesday and yesterday. It turns out to be any kind of craft they want to get together and visit while they do. Sis and some of the other ladies crochet. Some work on quilt projects, and she said one lady just comes and watches and visits. They all enjoy it. She said there were 15 of them there yesterday which was a pretty good group. A couple of the ladies are in the monthly bunco group that meets at our church.

One lens kept falling out of one pair of my glasses so when I went to Wal-Mart to pick up my prescriptions yesterday afternoon, I took it to the vision center and they told me the frames were warped. I bought new frames and they put the lenses in them and it is so much better now.

We went to the church around the corner this morning and looked at their rummage sale. We didn't find anything we wanted, but bought two cups of coffee and two donuts for $2. Later we went back and bought two of their chicken barbecue plates for $6 each.
Then we went to several rummage sales in the area. We didn't buy anything at any of them.
We went to the gas station and filled up the car, then went to New Braunfels. This is the last weekend of Wurstfest there. We parked for $5 and walked about a mile to the main part of town and looked at the tables set up for the arts and crafts show. Then we walked back and stopped at the arts and crafts building opposite the grounds where Wurstfest is being held. There we got two pulled pork sandwiches and two cups of coffee and looked at the arts and crafts tables there.
Then we walked back to the parking lot and drove back to San Antonio.
I took a nap after we got home.
It was chilly when we got up this morning (41 degrees), but warmed up into the 70's by this afternoon.

The Pumpkin Patch
Our tri-church group had 680 pumpkins delivered to one of the churches last Saturday. Every afternoon this week they have sold pumpkins. Sis has helped with the sales each afternoon and evening. Today they will hold a harvest festival with lots of activities for the children as well as the adults: face painting, cake walk, story telling, games, etc. Sis will be helping today as well. She baked two cakes to take to it.
A busy week at work
This has indeed been a busy week at work. On Monday the air conditioning company brought a huge crane and lifted the worn-out air conditioner off the roof and and hauled it away. There were rusty spots all over it and it looked like it had seen better days.
Early Tuesday morning the roofing company arrived and worked the rest of the week replacing the roof over all of the original building but not the newer section that holds the offices and sanctuary. The parking lot was pretty well filled each day with their trucks and equipment and even a porta-potty. By yesterday morning they had enough done that the a/c company could come again with their crane and hoist up the new air conditioner/heating unit. Their people and the roofers were all running up and downstairs all day.
The roofers still have some work to do, but I think the a/c people may be finished with their part.
The capacitor on my air conditioning here at the house went out (again), so I called the same company and they sent someone out yesterday afternoon to replace it. This is the third time this has happened. The last time was May 28th, so they didn't charge me this time. The man said they have now changed suppliers since they've had to replace so many of them all over the city.

Our trip to Branson, MO
Monday, September 27, 2010
We left home this morning at 7:15 by taxi and went to the Wedgewood apartments to meet the tour bus for our trip to Branson, MO. We were scheduled to leave there at 8:05 a.m., but two of the passengers hadn’t shown up and didn’t answer calls to their cell phones, so the bus driver waited nearly 45 minutes before leaving without them. Then he found out that they had gone to New Braunfels, TX to meet the bus there (without calling and telling him).
We eventually made up the lost time. We stopped for lunch at the Collins Street Bakery in Waco, TX. We each had a large chicken salad sandwich and a bowl of fire-roasted vegetable soup.
We arrived at the Choctaw Casino Resort and Hotel around 4:30 p.m. We don’t gamble, so we ate supper at the Blue Moon Café and then went to our rooms for the night. We had catfish, baked potato and cole slaw with coffee. It was delicious.

We had breakfast at the Blue Moon Café. That was included in our tour package. We started out again on our bus trip about 8:45 a.m.
We had lunch at Queen Wilhelmina State Park in Arkansas. It was a buffet lunch, also included.

Then back on the bus and on to Eureka Springs, Arkansas, where we checked into the Motel 62. That wasn’t such a great experience. It isn’t nearly as nice as the other places we stayed on our trip. The water wouldn’t turn off in the bathtub and right away we had to call the office for help. They got it nearly stopped, but it trickled constantly.
We had dinner at the Forest Hill Restaurant (included). That was nice. Then we attended the world famous Passion Play from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. That was good.
Then back to our rooms where we did get a good night’s sleep.
We were sitting at the top of the stadium and looking down at the stage of the Passion Play.

We had a “continental” breakfast at the motel of coffee, yogurt and donuts.
We picked up a local tour guide there. His name was Joe. He got on the bus with us and took us on a brief tour of Eureka Springs.

We went to a glass chapel in the woods called Thorncrown. It was very beautiful. The architect designed it to blend in with the surrounding wooded area. A woman there gave us the story of it and gave her own personal testimony which was very moving. We bought a CD of her singing.
After that we stopped to see the “Christ of the Ozarks” statue.
This is part of the park by the Passion Play and is near the statue of Christ of the Ozarks.
Our guide went on to Branson with us and stayed with us until Friday morning. We had lunch and entertainment on the Branson Belle Showboat. It was a delicious lunch of beef and chicken, potatoes, vegetables, rolls, and a frozen cheesecake dessert. There was entertainment on stage while we ate. It was a variety type show of singing and dancing. The boat cruised while we ate.

The Savannah House Hotel
At 3:00 p.m. we arrived at the Savannah House Hotel and had a little time to relax. Then at 5:30 we went to the Uptown Café for dinner. I had jumbo shrimp, slaw and baked potato. For dessert we had small sundaes. A husband and wife sang while we ate. The woman had worked for Charley Pride for some years before settling in Branson when he moved on.
From 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. we attended “The Clay Cooper Music Express.” We enjoyed it very much.
When we got back to the hotel, complimentary desserts and refreshments were available in the hospitality room. We each had coffee and blackberry cobbler with ice cream. Our rooms were very nice. We stayed there until Friday morning.

We had breakfast in the hospitality room at the hotel. They had a wide variety of breakfast foods.
From 9:30 a.m. until 12:15 p.m. we attended the Hughes Brothers Show.
Then we went to Grand Village Shops (a small mall) for lunch on our own and some shopping. We ate at Mel’s Hard Luck Café. Pricy but good. Phoebe had a footlong hot dog and a bowl of cheesy potato soup. I had a cup of the soup and I don't remember what else. Some of the waiters walked around through the dining area with microphones and sang for the diners as they ate. We were told that they have to audition before they get jobs there.
We wandered around the mall and had our pictures taken sitting in a huge rocking chair.

From 2:45 until 5:15 p.m. we attended the Jim Stafford Show.
Then we had dinner at McFarlain’s Restaurant. That was an interesting experience. The people at the table next to us were laughing and as we watched, their table got higher and higher. Finally a waiter came along with a booster seat and asked if any of them needed it. It was a trick table.
From 7:15 to 9:30 p.m. we attended the “Shoji Tabuchi Show”. That was very good and they go all out with the music and special effects. The bathrooms are world famous. They have gold fixtures and are very fancy.
Then we went back to the hotel where complimentary desserts were again available. We couldn’t resist having more blackberry cobbler with ice cream and coffee, but by now we were so tired that we took it to our room.

After having breakfast at the Savannah Hotel this morning, we went to the Brett Family Show. The audience was much smaller than at most of the shows we’ve attended, but it was a very good performance.

Joe, our travel guide, left us at this point.
When we left there, we went to Springfield, Missouri where we had lunch at Lambert’s Family Restaurant. The meal was very good and they really do throw the rolls at you. I had chicken salad, cottage cheese and a roll. The coffee cups and cold drink cups were huge.
Then we drove to the Precious Moments Chapel and gift shop near Carthage, Missouri. A docent was explaining all the pictures on the walls and ceiling of the chapel when we got there. It is beautiful and it is hard to imagine how the artist laid on his back on scaffolding for hours at a time to paint the angels on the ceiling. The walk from the gift shop to the chapel is beautiful too.

Around 7 p.m. we got to our hotel near Tulsa, Oklahoma. The rooms were very nice and as we were so tired, we didn’t go down to dinner but relaxed in our room and went to bed early.

We had breakfast at the Wild Potato Buffet at our hotel this morning, then left around 9 a.m.

We traveled on to Oklahoma City where we had a short stop at the Oklahoma City Bombing Memorial Park. It was a very moving experience.

From there we went to Norman, Oklahoma, where we had lunch at Jason’s Deli. They have a wonderful salad bar and we really enjoyed it.
Then back on the bus and heading toward Texas. I slept through part of this, but we stopped a couple of times for rest breaks. One woman in our group had got off in Oklahoma City. Another got off at Georgetown, Texas and three or four more at New Braunfels, Texas. Then we went on to San Antonio, where we got off with several others at the apartment complex where we had started our trip last Monday.
A couple from church who were also on the trip took several of us home in their van. It was about a quarter till ten when we got home.
Our cat, Calvin met us at the door and was very glad to see us home. He had been well cared for by a friend from church while we were gone, but I’m sure he was lonely without even the dog around for six days. Precious stayed at the kennel while we were gone and we had to leave her there until Monday as they are closed on Sundays.
We left home this morning at 7:15 by taxi and went to the Wedgewood apartments to meet the tour bus for our trip to Branson, MO. We were scheduled to leave there at 8:05 a.m., but two of the passengers hadn’t shown up and didn’t answer calls to their cell phones, so the bus driver waited nearly 45 minutes before leaving without them. Then he found out that they had gone to New Braunfels, TX to meet the bus there (without calling and telling him).
We eventually made up the lost time. We stopped for lunch at the Collins Street Bakery in Waco, TX. We each had a large chicken salad sandwich and a bowl of fire-roasted vegetable soup.
We arrived at the Choctaw Casino Resort and Hotel around 4:30 p.m. We don’t gamble, so we ate supper at the Blue Moon Café and then went to our rooms for the night. We had catfish, baked potato and cole slaw with coffee. It was delicious.

We had breakfast at the Blue Moon Café. That was included in our tour package. We started out again on our bus trip about 8:45 a.m.
We had lunch at Queen Wilhelmina State Park in Arkansas. It was a buffet lunch, also included.

Then back on the bus and on to Eureka Springs, Arkansas, where we checked into the Motel 62. That wasn’t such a great experience. It isn’t nearly as nice as the other places we stayed on our trip. The water wouldn’t turn off in the bathtub and right away we had to call the office for help. They got it nearly stopped, but it trickled constantly.
We had dinner at the Forest Hill Restaurant (included). That was nice. Then we attended the world famous Passion Play from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. That was good.
Then back to our rooms where we did get a good night’s sleep.

We had a “continental” breakfast at the motel of coffee, yogurt and donuts.
We picked up a local tour guide there. His name was Joe. He got on the bus with us and took us on a brief tour of Eureka Springs.

We went to a glass chapel in the woods called Thorncrown. It was very beautiful. The architect designed it to blend in with the surrounding wooded area. A woman there gave us the story of it and gave her own personal testimony which was very moving. We bought a CD of her singing.
After that we stopped to see the “Christ of the Ozarks” statue.
This is part of the park by the Passion Play and is near the statue of Christ of the Ozarks.
Our guide went on to Branson with us and stayed with us until Friday morning. We had lunch and entertainment on the Branson Belle Showboat. It was a delicious lunch of beef and chicken, potatoes, vegetables, rolls, and a frozen cheesecake dessert. There was entertainment on stage while we ate. It was a variety type show of singing and dancing. The boat cruised while we ate.

The Savannah House Hotel
At 3:00 p.m. we arrived at the Savannah House Hotel and had a little time to relax. Then at 5:30 we went to the Uptown Café for dinner. I had jumbo shrimp, slaw and baked potato. For dessert we had small sundaes. A husband and wife sang while we ate. The woman had worked for Charley Pride for some years before settling in Branson when he moved on.
From 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. we attended “The Clay Cooper Music Express.” We enjoyed it very much.
When we got back to the hotel, complimentary desserts and refreshments were available in the hospitality room. We each had coffee and blackberry cobbler with ice cream. Our rooms were very nice. We stayed there until Friday morning.
