Sunday evening

Today was really busy. I went to the church at 7:00 a.m. to turn on the air conditioning in the sanctuary and then worked in the fellowship hall and kitchen helping to decorate the tables, made the coffee and tea, and receiving food as people brought it in on their way to the morning service. Sis and another lady came in and helped. Sis decided to stay and help instead of going to her own church today.

This was the Sunday that all three of the churches met for a joint worship service. There were 121 there, which was a very good crowd. We normally have from 48 to 54 when it is just our own congregation. Most of them stayed for the dinner afterward.

After it was over, several of them helped with the clean-up. By that time Sis and I were plenty tired, so we were glad for the help. By the time we got home around 1:30 p.m., we were totally wiped out.

Shortly after we got home, another rainstorm came through. I was glad it didn't happen earlier. According to the weather forecast this evening, this could continue with these sudden showers for the next few days. It has cooled the temperatures somewhat, so that is nice. That is three evenings straight that we have had short but heavy rainstorms.

Saturday evening

So far our weekend has not been particularly exciting. We received notification a couple of days ago that in a little over a week, the city will be picking up brush in our neighborhood. They do this twice a year. Early this morning we trimmed trees and bushes and carried all of the debris to the curb.

Then I cleaned the garage, changed the air conditioner filters, and did three loads of laundry. The last load is drying right now.

We just got another heavy rain. After the sudden rainstorm last evening, I thought it might not rain again over the weekend. I guess I was wrong.

I hope not to find the fellowship hall at church flooded when I go down tomorrow morning to prepare for the covered dish luncheon. I will certainly be glad when the roof project is finished. The church was built In two sections and I think the new roof is just to replace the one over the oldest section. It will be quite expensive, so it is a good thing that the parsonage was sold to pay for it.

The plumeria plant in our back yard is really looking good after the rains we have gotten lately. Rain seems to have extra nutrients that the plants don’t get by hand-watering. The rain seems to have stopped. I wonder if we will get any more overnight.

We had homemade potato-cheese soup for supper, with chunks of challa bread. It was delicious.

Friday morning

It is sunny and around 80 at 11:00 a.m. I only work a half day on Fridays and this morning has been relatively quiet. I’ve updated the checkbooks and Quick Books; typed minutes of the latest committee meeting, caught up on the filing, answered numerous phone calls and checked on the people on the sick list.

Wednesday

We got a lot of heavy damaging rain yesterday and there is a 60% chance of more today, according to the forecast. Rain blew in the church in places that hadn't been leaking before and we've got water all over the building in different places. It's a real mess. None in the office, though. It even blew in around the edges of the stained glass window in the sanctuary and soaked the big Bible that was on the altar table by the pulpit.

When Sis was going home yesterday, she turned on a side street and there was a large tree down across the street so she had to turn around and go back to another street. Many trees and large branches were down throughout the city, and a lot of people lost their electricity. Ours went out at least long enough that we had to reset the electric clocks.

There were so many roads and intersections closed due to high water yesterday that the city ran out of the road closed signs and had to order 150 more brought in.

At our house we had some smaller branches down but nothing like I saw on TV and around other streets. We got more rain with thunder and lightning during the night, but I didn't go out and check the back yard before I left for work this morning, so I don't know if we have any more down.

One lady I was talking to on the phone a few minutes ago said they got 3 inches at their house yesterday and another 3 inches overnight.

The Methodist church in LaVernia, Texas about 20 or 30 miles from here, lost its roof in 70 per mile winds overnight. It stripped it right down to the wood framework. It showed pictures of it on the internet news this morning.

We did have a sunny afternoon, but more rain is forecast for tonight and it has been thundering.

Sis bought a flag today and hung it on the front of the house.

We went to the park and walked several laps around the walking path. I walked a total of a little over a mile.

Then we went to IHOP and had breakfast.

We did have the administrative council meeting at church yesterday. I left early because Sis called. She had walked to her church and got bitten by a dog on the way, so she didn't want to walk back home. I went and picked her up. Fortunately the bite didn't break the skin. It was a little Shi Tzu that ran out in the street as she was passing and bit her.

I went back to church until the meeting finished; then she and I went to the Little Red Barn for lunch.

We had sweet potato pancakes for breakfast..from a mix. They were very good, with some of Nancy's fig jam on them.

We went to Wendy's for lunch and I had the apple-pecan salad.

This afternoon we went to the ice cream festival at church. It was very nice, although the turnout wasn't as good as we had hoped. Since it is the Labor Day weekend, a number of people were out of town or otherwise engaged.

While we were there, we got word that one of the older members had fallen yesterday and broken his shoulder cap. He is home but won't be able to come to church tomorrow. His daughter will take him to see the orthopedic surgeon on Tuesday.

We had planned to have an administrative council meeting tomorrow after the morning church service, but this man is the chairperson of the administrative council. I don't know if they will go ahead and have it anyway. I'll just have to wait and see.

I traded in my cell phone on the "new every 2" plan. The new one is black; the old one was red. Other than that, it doesn't look a whole lot different than the one I had before. Of course everything is different, from the ring tones to the way to add or edit contacts and how to assign pictures or ring tones to different contacts.

We ate supper at Luby's in the mall, then came home and I have been "playing" with the phone ever since, trying to get it set up.
